Yes definitely keep the master up during tracking. It has no effect on the individual tracks that you are recording, but it will save you a lot of aggravation wondering why things "don't sound that great" when you are adjusting mics or playing with a direct feed.
I personally keep the fader to the rail all the time I'm working. I only pull it back if I think the phone rang :)
